Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a practice of accompaniment where one Christian helps another grow in their relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Rooted in centuries of Christian tradition, spiritual direction provides a dedicated space to discern God's presence and movement in your life, deepen your faith journey, and grow in spiritual maturity.

What happens in Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a prayerful conversation focused on your relationship with God:

  • Where and how is God present in your daily life?
  • What is God saying to you through Scripture, prayer, and life circumstances?
  • How is the Holy Spirit inviting you to grow or respond?
  • What challenges or obstacles are you encountering in your faith journey?
  • How might God be working through your seasons of consolation or desolation?

Your spiritual director serves as a companion who helps you recognize and respond to God's presence by:

  • Listening attentively to your experience and to the Holy Spirit.
  • Asking questions that help deepen your awareness of God's movement.
  • Notice patterns and connections you might miss on your own.
  • Offering spiritual wisdom from Scripture and Christian tradition.
  • Creating space for you to hear God's voice more clearly.
  • Supporting you through challenges in your spiritual journey.
  • Suggesting spiritual practices to nurture your relationship with Christ.

What Makes It Different?

Unlike other relationships in Christian life:

  • Spiritual direction focuses specifically on your relationship with God rather than on problem-solving.
  • The director's role is not to give advice but to help you discern God's direction.
  • The pace is contemplative, making space for silence and prayerful reflection.
  • The primary goal is deepening intimacy with Christ, not simply behavioural change.
  • Help you explore different approaches to meditation, prayer or reflection.

What Might We Explore?

Common themes in Christian spiritual direction include:

  • Your prayer life and relationship with Scripture.
  • Discernment of God's will in decisions and life changes.
  • Growth in Christian virtues and spiritual gifts.
  • Questions or struggles in your faith journey.
  • How God is speaking through your daily experiences.
  • Times of spiritual dryness or consolation.
  • Integration of faith into all aspects of life.
  • Deepening your understanding of Christian spiritual practices.

What to Expect

We typically meet once a month for about an hour. The conversation is confidential and non-judgmental. Each session might include:

  • Sharing significant moments in your spiritual journey since the last meeting.
  • Share experiences that feel significant.
  • Exploring where God seems to be present or active.
  • Noticing patterns in your relationship with God.
  • Explore practices that resonate with you.
  • Notice patterns in your life's journey.

Remember

Spiritual direction is not about "getting it right" but about growing in attentiveness to God's loving presence in your life. The Holy Spirit guides this journey, and your director serves as a companion along the way.
